IAT222-Palette
conceptual goals
In an increasingly interconnected world, globalization has unveiled a tapestry of diverse cultures, traditions, and beliefs. Palette, an immersive art exhibition, explores the vibrant colors and nuances of these myriad cultures.
As each culture symbolizes a unique shade, a society rich in multiculturalism forms a dazzling and colorful mosaic. Yet, globalization also poses the risk of cultural homogenization, blurring the distinctions that make each hue so captivating.
Palette wants to explore the complex and intricate relationship between globalization and multiculturalism. It celebrates the growth and development of cultural diversity while acknowledging the challenges of cultural homogenization. This exhibition serves as a call to action, urging the adoption of appropriate policies and measures to preserve the rich spectrum of cultural identities and foster global harmony and progress.
The questions in the questionnaire are flexible, and different questions can be customized based on different survey scopes. For example, when the survey scope is in the same country, the first question can be changed to "which city in this country are you from".
Analyze
Our artwork uses Daniel's interaction strategy known as "exemplary viewer" (Daniel, 2000). In this artwork, each audience member is required to answer questions to generate characters in the artwork. Each person represents a small point, a cultural background. And these points will remain in this artwork forever, as a part of this artwork. Participants are not only participants, but also part of the artwork, and the culture you represent does not only belong to you, it also belongs to this society.
Every choice you make, every question you answer will have different consequences on the dot that represents you. At the same time, the points you create will become a member of this huge society. Daniel's interactive strategy is also used here: Collective structures in the media realm (Daniel, 2000) constantly changes the digital space through the creative input of many people, making people participate in the work.
The different results of color, shape and area of the dot could be seen at the bottom of the questionaire before generating it.
inspiration
Our artwork is mainly influenced by the aesthetics of surrealism. Surrealism is interested in "the fusion of life and art, dream and reality, conscious and unconscious experience", which describes our approach to concepts. Surrealism dissolves the conflict between dream and reality to create an absolute reality (André Breton, 1924)
Various interactive artworks provided us with inspiration as we iteratively developed ideas that fit our philosophy and concepts. We refer to the idea presented in Valie Export's "Tap and Touch Cinema" in 1968, and make each person a part of the artwork. Everyone has a different cultural background, but lives in this society. The collision of people is like the collision of cultures. Our team created culture or the state of people in society with the change of color and trajectory of the ball. This is a combination of dream and reality, but it is neither reality nor dream.
